Afman travels to Poland with Athletes in Action

Head women's basketball coach Gregg Afman and junior Meredith Shanklin, gained international experience this summer on two separate trips with Athletes In Action. Afman coached a team made up of NCAA Division I players in a series of games in Poland, while Shanklin traveled to play in Bolivia.

Afman traveled to Warsaw, Poland from June 4-18 to coach a women's team made up of players from such schools as the University of Texas, Mississippi State University, Rice University and the University of Minnesota. The squad played a three-game series against the Polish Junior National Team and also played against the winner of a National Club Tournament.

This is Afman's second trip with AIA, as he coached a team which traveled to Poland and Switzerland in 1997. He has been head coach at Westmont since 1999, building a record of 45-45, including a 39-25 mark in the past two years.

Shanklin, who is already Westmont's all-time leader in 3-pointers, traveled with AIA to Bolivia in mid-summer. She averaged 11.8 points last season and converted 76 3-point field goals. In two seasons, Shanklin has 153 3-pointers.

AIA international teams are designed to give Christian athletes and coaches intensive training in their faith and the opportunity to use the platform of their sport to share Christ with others. These international projects begin with a training camp where athletes train hard physically, receive instruction in ministry skills and cross-cultural communication, and learn to apply biblical principles to their athletic training and competition.

Becky Gibb and Katie Hardeman, both sophomores, were named to the 2002 All-GSAC women's basketball team. It is the second straight all-conference honor for Hardeman, and the first for Gibb. They are the only two sophomores on the 14-person squad.

Hardeman, from Brea, Calif., currently led the Warriors in scoring with a 14.8 average while shooting .470 from the field. She was second on the team in rebounding (5.2) and also averaged 3.1 assists per game and had a team-high 48 steals.

Gibb, from Highland Ranch, Colo., ended with averages of 12.3 points and 6.1 rebounds. In addition she ranked second in the GSAC with a 5.48 assist average. Gibb became the first Westmont player to earn NAIA National Player of the Week honors back on January 13 after averaging 13.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in a pair of Warrior victories. She missed the final five games of the season after suffering a knee injury on February 5.
