Fall 2014 Student & Family Orientation Schedule

 

Thursday, August 28

8am - 1pm                  Student Move-in

Please follow the signs to park and proceed to your residence hall. Student volunteers will be available from 8am until 1pm to help unload vehicles and carry belongings to rooms. To help with the speed and efficiency of the move-in process, please come to campus according to the following schedule:

                                    All Transfer and Consortium   8:00-9:30

Last names beginning with A-J            8:00-9:30

                                    Last names beginning with K-R          9:30-11:00

                                    Last names beginning with S-Z           11:00-12:30

Location: Page, Clark, Armington, Emerson, Van Kampen, and Ocean View Halls

 

8am - 1pm                  Welcome Center*

Come to the welcome tent on the lawn in front of Kerrwood Hall to pick up your Orientation folder and schedule, to have your ID card photo taken, and to be introduced to important Westmont resources and departments.

Location: Lawn in front of Kerrwood Hall

 

2pm                            Welcome Chapel*

The entire Westmont community and guests are invited to this celebratory opening event of Orientation 2014. President Gayle D. Beebe will discuss the founding values of the college followed by a message for all new students from Campus Pastor Ben Patterson.

            Location: Murchison Gym

 

3:30 – 5:15pm             We Are Westmont*

Experience the richness of WestmontÕs community through sight, sound and story. Join upper-class students and as they share their life and Westmont experiences. The session will conclude with meetings in Orientation small groups.

Location: Murchison Gym

 

7pm                            First Lecture*

Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Thomas Knecht will deliver a dynamic lecture on your summer reading book Healing for a Broken World by Steve Monsma. This program is designed to engage your class in a shared academic experience and to give you a peek at classroom life.

                                    Location: Page Multipurpose Room

 

8:30pm                       Res Life Night*

This is where you will meet some of your closest community members, including your Resident Director (RD), Resident Assistant (RA), and the other students living in your section.

Location: Page Residents in Page Multipurpose Room, Clark Residents in Murchison Gym, Transfer Students in Armington C Lounge

 

9:30pm                       Transfer/Consortium Student Banana Split Extravaganza

                                    Come meet residence life staff, returning students and other transfer students for food, fellowship, and fun.

                                    Location: Van Kampen Courtyard

 

Friday, August 29

           

8am - Noon                Individual Student Academic Advising Appointments*

Please look at the academic advising letter in your Orientation folder to find out the name of your advisor and the time and place of your advising appointment. If you have class schedule changes, please complete an add/drop slip with your advisor and bring it with you to the first day of classes.

                                    Location: Your Faculty AdvisorÕs Office   

 

3pm                            Service of Commitment*

Join faculty robed in traditional academic regalia for this formal ceremony of welcome into the Westmont community. Students will sit separately from parents and take their First Walk at the end of the service, which anticipates their Last Walk at Commencement. This is the last scheduled event for parents.

                                    Location: Murchison Gym

 

6:30 – 8:30pm            PresidentÕs Open House*

All new students are invited to the presidentÕs house for a light dessert. You will attend this semi-formal event with your residence hall section. Transfer and consortium students will meet in the Kerr Student Center parking lot at 6:15pm to walk up together.

                                    Location: PresidentÕs house

           

Saturday, August 30

 

10:30 – Noon              For Women and Men Only Meetings*

Discuss gender-specific issues that arise in college. Led by Westmont staff, these discussions provide a safe place for candid conversations about topics that matter.

Location: Men in Upper Kerr Student Center, Women in Page Multipurpose Room.

 

3pm                            WomenÕs Soccer Game

Come cheer on the womenÕs soccer team as they host Baker University. First 100 superfans get a free frozen treat.

Location: Thorington Field

 

 

5 - 6:30pm                  BBQ Dinner and Church Fair

Representatives from local churches will provide information about opportunities to worship in the community, including service times and transportation options.

Location: Baseball Field

 

Sunday, August 31

 

Noon - 5pm               Explore Santa Barbara

Head to the beach or explore State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. Shuttles will leave from Page Hall every 15 minutes beginning at noon. After 5:00pm, the shuttles will revert to their regular schedules.

Location: East Beach & State Street
