  • Westmont alumnus Brad Frohling chairs the Westmont Foundation Board of Directors.
  • President Gayle D. Beebe spoke briefly about Westmont and introduced General Powell.
  • General Powell shared some lessons about leadership he learned from President Ronald Reagan.
  • General Powell noted the resiliency of Americans and their ability to come together to solve problems.
  • Religious studies professor Charles Farhadian moderated the Convocation with General Powell and four
student panelists.

  • Powell told Westmont students, “There’s an American success story every single day in this country.
Look around this audience—there are American success stories all over the place.”

  • When asked why students should care about decisions made in Washington, D.C., Powell answered,
“Because it is their government, and because the whole system of democracy we have rests on the role
of people. You are the people!”
