Monarch butterflies are popular insects in North America because of their colorful markings and their migration patterns. In the late summer/early fall, monarchs move from the northern and central United States to Mexico, and then in the spring, multigenerational groups of monarchs return north. These “dual citizenship” insects can be thousands strong, making stops along the way to rest and to eat during their migration. They know no borders. Monarchs become a surrogate for Mexican and American families who move over the borders seeking a warmer climate, welcoming hospitality, or better jobs. Human families do, however, know borders.
