Brian Alfred (American, b. 1974)
The Saddest Day of My Youth, 2005
Acrylic on canvas
Gift of Berkus Family Collection
The Saddest Day of My Youth depicts the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the 1986 disaster that killed all seven crewmembers as they took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Alfred ponders how each generation has a national tragedy that affects their perception of the world. The artist’s parents were shaped by the Kennedy assassination and Millennials remember the horror of 9/11.
