Charles Garabedian
Charles Garabedian (American, b. 1923)
Self Portrait as a Bobble-head, 2006
Acrylic on paper
Westmont Acquisition
An American artist, Garabedian is of Armenian descendant. He began painting in his early thirties after pursuing a B.A. in history from the University of Southern of California and later received an M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He identifies with Expressionism, yet values academic formalism, especially conscious of the unifying influence of a well-structured composition. His works often make visible his internal stream of consciousness, punctuated by references to art history, all done with his signature wit and sense of the absurd. In his Self Portrait, set in his studio, he becomes a bobble-headed toy amid subtle references to masters like Picasso, Mondrian, de Chirico, and more.
