Last summer, I purchased an old film camera from eBay to use when I go surfing. Capturing the art and rituals of surfing became a daily practice, which I then turned into a series of screenprints: the creation of a board, the search for waves, the feeling of flight on the water, and all the parts in between. Growing up, I was surrounded by my dad’s old surf magazines, and I wanted to recreate that nostalgic feeling of bitmapped and hand-drawn photo layouts as an homage to the graphic style of the golden era of surfing. These prints also explore moments of the sport from a lens that is accessible to a non-surfing audience; expressing feelings of yearning, attainment, bliss, and connection with the earth that are both universal and spiritual. Throughout this process, waiting for good waves to surf became waiting for good waves to shoot, and I have discovered that the slow process and practice of photographing, collaging, and printing mirrors the aesthetic experiences of handcrafting a board, waiting for waves, and time spent in the water.
