We all have a face that we show to the outside world, one that does not allow us to seem vulnerable or easily hurt; however, we are all inherently broken people. We often mask the socially unwanted parts of ourselves by carefully curating a certain look or personality for others. But what would it look like for us to be vulnerable with one another? Would society change? Would it be for better or for worse?
My oil paintings depict people’s morning routines. In choosing raw, unfiltered moments, I am addressing the emotional insecurities that influence the way we present ourselves to the outside world. Each color represents the essence of an emotion: apathy, jealousy, anger, anxiety, loneliness, and shame. I am depicting the acts we all perform while getting ready in the morning, whether putting on makeup or fixing our hair, as a ritualistic attempt at masking our worst feelings--covering up the burdens we carry. I am drawn to this concept because I have seen many people hide what they are truly feeling for fear of being shamed.
I believe that all emotions are relevant and necessary for us to learn and grow. Emotions make us vulnerable. They make us real. They make us human.
