The Czars, 1991
Sculpture
Gift of Marie and Arnold Forde
In the 1990s, Karen Kilimnik was well-known for her “scatter art,“ where she haphazardly installed material debris, such as photographs, fabric, and furniture. The Czars is one of the best examples of her scatter art installations. By including a photograph of the trashed basement of the Ipatiev House (the last home of the Romanovs), along with a pile of fake snow, pink tulle, and various trinkets, Kilimnik invokes the execution of the Romanovs, creating a chaotic, theatrical blend of fact versus fiction.
