Lawrence Gipe - Woman and Window

Lawrence Gipe was born in Baltimore, Maryland and currently teaches art at the University of Arizona. Since the 1980s, Gipe has appropriated imagery taken from a large archive of propaganda tracks, social realist photography books, and art that has been approved by political authorities. Gipe takes small, often black and white images, and creates large, stunning works in color. The artist removes the image from its original context, allowing us to reinterpret and reimagine the ideological significance of the work.

In Woman and Window, what seems to be a peaceful moment of a woman looking out of her window, suddenly changes when we, the viewers, realize this image was used as propaganda. Could the subject be waiting for her partner to return from war? Could she be watching a military parade below? Could she be running to the window after hearing an explosion? What seems so peaceful a scene has many disturbing interpretations.

Hear from Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum's Education &
Outreach Coordinator, Tamara Vaughan talk about Gipe's work!
