Growing up, I moved a lot and lived in many diverse cities and countries. The more I moved, the more I found myself comforted by the near universal presence of street art and graffiti in public places. I thought it was interesting that someone could feel something so strongly that they chose to write it somewhere publicly, and how these anonymous thoughts could impact me so deeply that I would keep a record of them through photographs. Inspired by these phrases, I created this series of collages as my personal, visual response to them, with titles that name the location where the graffiti was originally discovered. There is often a conversational element to street art, as other artists can add and respond to the original work; I crafted collages that depict such layers of evolution, like a wall one would find in New York City. By placing graffiti on canvas I wanted to bring street art into a gallery space, and encourage the viewer to contemplate art that often goes unnoticed but has an unconscious influence in shaping our culture. Through my collages, I explore the process of putting thoughts and feelings into words and how this helps us recognize our own unique place in the world.
