The year 2016 formed a chapter in my life where I found myself disassociating ownership of my body from my mind. I bought into the lie that I was unworthy, ruined, and incapable of spiritual redemption because of the sexual assault I had survived during a study abroad program in Bali. The labor to triumph over that false conclusion has taken time, support, and trust in God to begin the steps of healing through forgiveness and love. These portraits represent a window into the dialogues between my sister and me as we cope collectively with the trauma. And Then It was Good depicts vulnerability and nakedness intertwined with Balinese symbolism in order to portray my hidden story. It represents my untold testimony, which I am grateful I could finally share, express, and heal through my art.
