APP-191SS Serving Society
Outside of a service-oriented internship, students have the option of fulfilling the Compassionate Action graduation requirement another way.
A Note to Volunteer Organization Supervisors
We're thankful for your participation in offering volunteer opportunities for Westmont students. As part of our Applied Learning Agreement Form (ALAF), you will need to review and approve the Volunteer Supervisor Agreement on behalf of your organization. This form will also be available to review when you receive an email from Westmont College once your student worker(s) has launched the ALAF.
A Note to Westmont Students
By enrolling in APP-191SS -Serving Society for zero credits in advance of or at the beginning of the term, a student elects to log a minimum of 12 hours of community service over the course of the semester. Options for service include existing ministry and outreach options through Campus Life and other sites as approved by the course instructor. APP-191SS requires some reading and a service debrief discussion. The student's hours are documented and his or her work is evaluated by the site supervisor. Fulfilling your Serving Society requirement should NOT be construed as completing an internship. Students are strongly encouraged to complete one or more internships prior to graduation. Course requirements include but may not be limited to the following:
- Meet with Kelley Funk (kfunk@westmont.edu) for the course orientation during the first week of classes. Syllabus
- Complete the online ALAF by the due date. (The ALAF is not considered complete unless it is approved by a worksite supervisor and Westmont's service coordinator.)
- Serve a minimum of twelve hours over the course of the semester at an approved site. Six hours of service must be completed by midterm.
- Complete the assigned reading.
- Meet with the Service Coordinator in small groups reflect on and debrief the service.
- Supervisor submits evaluation and documents service hours.
