College Choir Sings Through Western U.S.
By
Westmont
About 50 members of the Westmont College Choir and Chamber Singers will tour through Southern California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, singing a diverse repertoire of classic and contemporary sacred and secular music, folk songs, spirituals and vocal jazz.
The College Choir, under the direction of Michael Shasberger, studies and performs a wide range of literature, including the classic repertoire of the past five centuries and music of other cultures. The choir will perform works by Ken Berg, Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Stephen Caracciolo, Dan Forrest, Arvo Pärt, J.A.C. Redford and John Tavener.
The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Grey Brothers, will present sacred music of the Renaissance by English composer Adrian Batten and the Italian Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. More recent compositions in the art music tradition will include lovely settings of sacred texts by Healy Willan, Gerald Near and Mark Buller. A highlight in the recent secular repertoire will be Howard Helvey’s setting of “Three Teasdale Madrigals.”
Within the past five years, the College Choir and Chamber Singers have toured in Coast Rica, Guatemala, England, Scotland, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California.
Admission to all the events is free with a free-will offering taken during the program.
