Concert to Feature Poulenc's 'Gloria'

The Westmont Music Department performs several concerts this month, beginning with Masterworks on April 5 at 8 p.m. and April 7 at 3 p.m., both in First United Methodist Church, 305 E Anapamu St. General admission is $10 and students are free.

The concert includes the Westmont Orchestra, the Men and Women of College Choir, directed by Michael Shasberger, and Chamber Singers and Men’s Chorale, directed by Grey Brothers. Celeste Tavera is the featured soprano soloist. The 60 voice choir, orchestra and Tavera will perform Francis Poulenc’s “Gloria.” Also on the program, “Vier Gesange (Four Songs)” by Johannes Brahms for Women of College Choir, horns and harp and Dan Forrest’s “His Robes For Mine” for strings and Men of College Choir. The Westmont Chamber Singers will sing the Gloria by the renaissance master Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina.

The Instrumental Chamber Concert is Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m. at Montecito Covenant Church, 671 Cold Spring Rd.

The String Chamber Concert is Monday, April 15, at 8 p.m. in Westmont’s Deane Chapel.

The Spring Choral Concert, gathering the College Choir, Chamber Singers, Men’s and Women’s Chorale and other ensembles for their season finale, Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 1500 State Street.

The Vocal Chamber Concert is Sunday, April 21, at 8 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church.

The Composers Concert will showcase new work by student composers, performed by their peers on Monday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in Deane Chapel. The program includes music for a trio of violins, string quartet, string quartet and piano, chamber vocal ensemble, a duet for harp and piano, and “a poem for cello and reader. “As always, this concert promises to be an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and refreshment,” says Steve Butler, professor of music and department chair.

John Enrico Douglas conducts the Jazz Concert on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in Deane Chapel.

Student soloists will highlight the Westmont Orchestra Concerto Concert, performing music by Mozart, Beethoven, Bizet and Emma Lou Diemer on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Montecito Covenant Church, 671 Cold Spring Rd., and Friday, April 26, at 8 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance Ave. General admission is $10 and students are free.
