David Winter, Glen Adams Join Santa Barbara Rescue Mission Board

Westmont Chancellor David Winter and recently retired Executive Vice President for Advancement Glen Adams have joined the board of directors of the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission, board President Steen Hudson announced.

“We are so pleased that Dr. Winter and Dr. Adams have joined the Rescue Mission board. They know and understand us, and we are delighted they have agreed to lend their talents to this important community program,” Hudson said.

Winter served Westmont as president for 25 years before retiring in June 2001. During his tenure, he was recognized as one of the nation’s most effective college presidents and continues to serve as a resource and model for college presidents around the nation.

He served for nine years on the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the regional accrediting association for Western colleges and universities, and has been a board member of the Council on Higher Education in Washington, D.C., the Independent Colleges of Southern California, and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, among many others.

A longtime community volunteer, Winter has been honored with numerous awards, including the Santa Barbara News-Press Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. Also that year, the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse named him one of their “Twelve Men of Distinction.” In 1999, the John Templeton Foundation selected Winter as one of 50 college presidents who have exercised leadership in character development.

Adams served Westmont for 24 years before retiring in fall 2001. As director of major gifts and then executive vice president for advancement, Adams was key to the development over the years of Westmont’s strong and broad base of support.

Prior to joining Westmont, Adams taught history and then served as vice president for advancement at Azusa Pacific University. Like Winter, Adams has served a long list of community organizations.

Also joining the board is Dave Odell, a Westmont alumnus and chief financial officer and vice president for development for Tynan Group in Santa Barbara.

The Rescue Mission operates a 12-month residential drug and alcohol treatment program for men and women of the Central Coast. The mission also runs an emergency shelter for up to 100 people each day. The program receives no government funding, and has served the community since 1965.
