Fletcher Jones Foundation Grant

The Fletcher Jones Foundation has given $500,000 to Westmont for the acquisition of new science equipment.

This grant is the lead gift toward a $2.3 million effort to equip the new David K. Winter Hall for Science and Mathematics with state-of-the-art science equipment and to upgrade the observatory.

The foundation was established in 1969 by the co-founder of Computer Services Corporation, Fletcher Jones. The first gift from the foundation to Westmont was in 1981 to establish a student loan fund. Subsequent gifts to the college have provided both science equipment and technology-related upgrades. The most recent grant from the foundation, in 1998, helped the campus with a computer technology upgrade.

“We have always had a high regard for Westmont College,” Executive Director of the Fletcher Jones Foundation Christine Sisley said. “We are pleased to cooperate with them, in fulfillment of our common mission, which is the advancement of private higher educational institutions in California.”

“We are so grateful for the long-standing relationship Westmont has had with the Fletcher Jones Foundation,” Westmont President Stan Gaede said. “Their previous gifts have been instrumental in keeping our campus on the cutting edge of technology and this most recent gift will provide our students with the tools necessary to pursue and grow in academic opportunities.”

The new building, named after Chancellor David Winter, who retired as president of the college in June 2001 after 25 years, is included in the college’s long-range master plan. An update of the master plan is under review by Santa Barbara County.
