Gundry to Examine Matthew's Portrayal of Peter

Robert Gundry, Westmont’s scholar-in-residence, will present a lecture that contends the Gospel of Matthew differs significantly from the other Gospels in its portrayal of Peter. The lecture will be held on Monday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. in Hieronymus Lounge at Westmont’s Kerrwood Hall. The Provost’s Lecture is free and open to the public. The talk is co-sponsored by the Gaede Institute for the Liberal Arts and the Westmont Office of the Provost.

The event will include the commemoration of a new festschrift published in Gundry’s honor, “Reconsidering the Relationship between Biblical and Systematic Theology in the New Testament,” edited by alumni B. E. Reynolds '99, B. Lugioyo '99, and K. J. Vanhoozer '78 (Mohr Siebeck, 2014). Reynolds and Lugioyo both graduated from Westmont and studied under Gundry, and they recruited seven other alumni scholars in the fields of New Testament and theology to contribute chapters to the book.

Gundry, professor emeritus of New Testament and Greek, taught for 38 years at Westmont before retiring in 2000. One of the preeminent New Testament scholars in the world, he has published numerous books, including major commentaries on Matthew and Mark, as well as many articles for scholarly journals. He earned a doctorate from Manchester University in 1961. He has been honored with the Teacher of the Year Award three times, the Faculty Researcher of the Year Award, and the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.
