Masterworks Concert Features Bach

The Westmont College Choir will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Jesu, Meine Freude” at the fifth annual Choral Masterworks Concert, 8 p.m. Feb. 25 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1500 State St. in downtown Santa Barbara.

The suggested donation for admission is $10 for the general audience and $7 for students and seniors.

Music Professor Steve Hodson will conduct the College Choir in the 11-movement Bach motet, accompanied by strings and organ.

Composed in 1723 for the funeral of the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster, “Jesu, meine Freude” (“Jesus, my joy”) is one of six motets written by J.S. Bach. Its musical foundation is a chorale by Johann Crüger with text by Johann Franck. To supplement Franck’s poetry, Bach included passages from Romans 8.

Associate Music Professor Grey Brothers will direct the Chamber Singers in “The Kyrie,” “Sanctus” and “Agnus Dei” from the “Mass for Four Voices” by William Byrd.
