More than 20 ‘Just Dance!’ at Fall Concert

5dancersThe Westmont Fall Dance Concert, “Just Dance!” featuring more than 20 student dancers and choreography by faculty members Susan Alexander and Christina Sanchez, is Friday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., all in Porter Theatre. Tickets, which cost $10 for general admission; $7 for students, seniors or children, may be purchased online at westmont.edu/boxoffice or by calling (805) 565-7140.

Eight female student dancers will perform a piece Alexander choreographed, “Wait, Shift, Weight Shift.” “The dancers contributed during the creative process,” Alexander says, “working with the commands ‘wait’ and ‘shift,’ while exploring the different ways to shift one’s weight or make contact with the floor.”

“Party of Three” features a trio of dancers, sophomore Brenna Humphrey, sophomore Claire Masterson and senior Kyndal Vogt, who use various permutations of inhabiting the stage space, moving in elegant unison or in structured contrast with each other to a rhythmical musical support.

Alexander choreographed a solo for senior Miranda Wittrock, “On My Way,” alluding to her evolution while at Westmont as a dance minor and soon leaving college to enter the professional world.  “Miranda, an expressive and talented dancer, is sure to move audience members with her passion for dance,” Alexander says.

Sophomore Olivia Hughes performs a solo choreographed by Alexander, “Taking Charge,” affirming her existence with joy and with masterful physical prowess.

Wittrock and senior Annie Koeller choreographed a duet they’ll perform, while Masterson and first-year Amanda Delaura will perform solos of pieces they choreographed based on inspiring Psalms.  First-year students Halie Evans and Heidi Rosentrater will also dance in pieces choreographed by faculty.

The concert offers a formal venue for Westmont’s resident hip-hop company, NSTEP, whose work will captivate audiences.

The faculty production crew includes Jonathan Hicks, lighting director, and Miller James, costume designer.
