Talk Explores Faith, Wealth and Poverty

Roy Goble ’81, president of Pathlight International, explores the tension between living in an age of great wealth and great poverty in a lecture about his book, “Junkyard Wisdom: Resisting the Whisper of Wealth in a World of Broken Parts,” Thursday, Jan. 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Winter Hall room 212. “How do Christians living in an age of plenty respond to needs in a global society?” asks lecture organizer Cynthia Toms, associate professor of kinesiology. “His model and his life espouse a framework that calls us to the difficult work of building authentic relationships with those different than us, starting right here in own backyard.”

Pathlight International is an organization that serves at-risk children in Belize by providing them with quality secondary education. Goble serves on several boards, including that of his alma mater, Westmont. He and his wife, D’Aun, own Goble Properties, a real-estate investment company based in Oakland.

“I am inspired by Roy’s deep knowledge and belief that in order to build an abundant future society and to find our own place in God’s kingdom, we must do more than just give charitably or offer a one-off service trip or volunteer day,” Toms says. “We must get to know those living in poverty and build a life that intentionally breaks down barriers.”
