“Trouble the Water” Comes to Westmont

An exhibit of the emotionally charged and thought-provoking paintings of Chicago artist Tim Lowly, inspired by his severely developmentally disabled daughter, opens the fall season at Westmont’s Reynolds Gallery. “Trouble the Water” runs Aug. 20-Oct. 19.

Lowly will speak about his life and work during a Westmont chapel service 10:30 a.m. Oct. 18 in Murchison Gymnasium. A closing reception will be 4-6 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Westmont Art Center. All events are free and open to the public.

Lowly’s exhibit deals with the questions concerning what it means to be human. He has said that through his work he is “interested in imaging the value of being — apart from the capability of doing something.”

Primarily working in the painting medium, Lowly also produces work in sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He has exhibited in museums and galleries from Los Angeles to New York to Seoul, Korea, and is currently an artist-in-residence at Chicago’s North Park University.

The son of medical missionaries, Lowly spent most of his youth in South Korea. He graduated from Calvin College in 1981 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Since 1995 he has been affiliated with North Park University as gallery director, instructor and artist in residence.
