Scott Craig
Longtime Westmont trustee Gary Harris died Oct. 27 from a heart attack. He was 87.
President Gayle D. Beebe announced to the Westmont community that he and Pam were praying for Gary's wife, Jo Harris, and their family, and encouraged the community to do so as well.
"All of us who served alongside Gary marveled at his unique blend of faith, competence and humor," Beebe said. "He had a wonderful way of lightening the load of every situation. Pam and I especially appreciated the love and support he and Jo have provided throughout our time at Westmont."
A well-known local banking executive and vice president at Santa Barbara Bank & Trust for many years, Gary joined Westmont’s board in 1980. He served as chair for six years, from 1995-2001, and led the search committee for a new president when David K. Winter announced his retirement in 2000. Gary also served on the board of the Westmont Foundation.
In 1999, Gary played a role in Westmont’s purchase of the 3.4-acre Stackpoole property next to the southern entrance to campus, the site for the Global Leadership Center and residence hall.
Gary was actively involved in the Santa Barbara community in addition to his support and volunteer work for Westmont.
After 33 years on the board, he became a trustee emeritus in 2013 and continued his love and support for Westmont.
