Warriors Volleyball Off to a Smashing Start
By
Westmont
The Westmont women’s volleyball team, ranked #16 in the NAIA, is off to its best start in Warrior history, winning the first nine games. Westmont dominated the ASICS/Wyndham Labor Day Tournament at Concordia University, beating #25 Carroll (Mont.) and William Jessup. Earlier, the Warriors turned heads at the Biola Summer Slam, knocking off #6 College of Idaho, as well as Concordia (Ore.) and William Jessup.
In 2002, the Warriors jumped out to an 8-0 start, finishing in the NAIA National Tournament quarterfinals.
“It’s a good feeling to have the two early season tournaments out of our way and to have had so much success in both of them,” says Westmont head coach Patti Cook. “It is good to have that as a foundation to the rest of our season.”
Cook’s playing career was reaching new heights before the Warriors took the court. In May, she was tournament MVP, leading the Green Star Coffee Shots to first place in the Women’s A Gold Division of the 2013 USA Volleyball Open Championships in Louisville.
The Warriors’ attack has been led by junior Madison Serrano, who has 108 kills, and senior Ciara Turner and freshman Jessica McCann, each with 67 kills.
The Warriors host Capilano University of British Columbia Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., La Sierra University on Friday, Sept. 6, at 4:30 p.m. and California Lutheran University on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., all in Murchison Gym.
