Westmont Offers Free Recital by Tenor

darryl_taylorThe founder of the African American Art Song Alliance, Darryl Taylor, will perform at a free recital Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m. in Westmont’s Deane Chapel.

Taylor is a talented tenor from Detroit whose international career includes performances of art song, opera and oratorio. He has sung in some of the best concert halls in the world, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Merkin Concert Hall and Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica.

He has toured Spain extensively, where he has garnered particular praise. Taylor has appeared with orchestras such as the Johann Strauss Sinfonietta of Vienna and the W.A. Mozart Philharmonic of Cluj, Romania.

His most recent recording, “Poetry Preludes: Music of Richard Thompson,” will be released on February 1, 2006. He’s also received praise for other recordings including “Love Rejoices: Songs of H. Leslie Adams” and “Dreamer: A Portrait of Langston Hughes.”

Taylor earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan and is an assistant professor at UC Irvine.
