The sports information directors in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) selected Westmont’s Ron Smith as the 2015 Sports Information Director of the Year at their annual meeting late in the spring. The group established the award in 2014.
Smith has worked as the sports information director (SID) at Westmont since 2004. He oversees media relations, maintains the athletics website, manages games and broadcasts, keeps statistics, produces athletic publications, manages social media and serves as the athletics historian.
“Ron is a leader amongst the SIDs in the conference,” said GSAC Commissioner Mike Daniels. “He is a professional in every sense of the word and has the best interests of the conference’s student-athletes always in mind. He has been very giving of his time for conference events and has played an integral role in the conference website for many years.”
Smith serves on the NAIA-SIDA board, mentors younger SIDs in the conference and votes on the national player. He assisted with media relations at the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship final site, served as the site manager for two postseason competitions, and represented Westmont’s athletic department at the NAIA National Convention and the GSAC Administrative Meetings. He also volunteers to run the scoreboard for local high school athletic events.
Previously, Smith worked in online media for four years after nearly 20 years in ministry. He graduated with a degree in religion from Pepperdine University. He and his wife, Leslie, have three grown children and four granddaughters.
