Westmont Trustees Welcome New Member

Patty Martin of Woodside, Calif., has been installed as the newest member of the Westmont College Board of Trustees. Martin, 56, is a certified spiritual director and teaches classes at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in spiritual formation.

“I think Westmont has a great balance of encouraging critical Christian thinking without being legalistic,” she says, “and looking at the whole person in terms of growing to become God-like within whatever realm God calls you to.”

Martin earned a bachelor’s degree at San Jose State University and master’s degrees in education and counseling psychology at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont.

She found out about Westmont through several graduates. At the time, she was working with teenagers at a high school ministry and looking for a good Christian environment for college and beyond.
“Just observing their character and meeting their friends and being part of their lives,” Martin says,”I could see that Westmont was providing something wonderful.”

Martin and her husband, Eff, have been married for 30 years and have three children. Eff is a retired investment banker and is a trustee at Pepperdine University.

As a board member, Martin says she wants to positively influence students who are looking for a great Christian liberal arts experience.

The board of trustees sets the college’s annual budget and oversees the operation of the college. It recently launched a search to begin finding a successor to Stan D. Gaede who will step down as president in July.
