Westmont Unveils Unseen Works from Renowned Artist


Westmont College’s Reynolds Gallery kicks off the 2005-2006 season by celebrating the legacy of one of America’s best-known artists. Richard Diebenkorn: Unseen Santa Barbara Works will be open to the public Aug. 25-Nov. 4. Diebenkorn(1922-2003) lived most of his life in California, becoming a modern master equally adept at abstract expressionism, landscape and figurative work. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings and etchings inspired by Santa Cruz Island from the Carey Stanton collection, as well as works from private collections which have never been on public display.

The College will host an opening reception Thursday, Aug. 25, from 4:30-7 p.m. A guest lecture will precede the opening Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Theatre with art historian Kenneth D. Allan and potential discussion participants Chris Diebenkorn(Richard’s son) and President of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation Marla Daily.

The Reynolds Gallery at Westmont College serves as a learning resource for students and the community. The Diebenkorn exhibit will be available for public viewing from 10-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
