WSA Marathon Golfers

The 15th Annual Sports Banquet and Golf Outing netted more than $70,000 for athletic scholarships in June. The event had the largest turnout in history, and one couple committed to give $50,000 to establish a new endowed scholarship for athletes.

Speakers at the banquet included Steve Lavin, ESPN and ABC basketball analyst (left, bottom photo); Sharm Scheuerman, legendary University of Iowa basketball player and coach (third from the left); and Nate Fleming ’06, a 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, two-time NAIA All-American and school record-holder in the javelin.Westmont Trustees Tom Nelson and Roy Goble also participated.

“Like the Golden Eagle awards dinner, this event allows supporters and new friends alike to tune into the very essence of Westmont athletics,” says Executive Vice President Cliff Lundberg ’65.

More than three dozen golfers took part in the all-day marathon at La Purisma Golf Course. Ron Newton and Jon Walker ’91 co-chaired the event. Committee members included: Jeff Azain ’86, David McCurry, Tom Nelson, Brent Johnson ’93, Mike Sheffey ’93, John Nygren ’94, Shannon McCabe Jones ’93, Adrian Phillips ’03 and Dave Flaherty ’04.
