Westmont Magazine Ending and Beginning
Lloyd J. Ogilvie, chaplain of the United States Senate, addressed the 340 graduates of the class of 1997 at Commencement in May, and President David K. Winter awarded him an honorary doctor of divinity degree. Dr. Ogilvie served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, California, before becoming chaplain in 1995. An internationally known author and preacher, he has written more than 40 books.
President Winter presented the Westmont Medal to Anita J. Mackey, a clinical social worker for the Veterans Administration for nearly 30 years. Honored for her years of service to individuals and communities, she is well known in Santa Barbara for her work on non-profit boards and committees such as the NAACP and the American Red Cross.
Patrick Steele ’97, who suffered a serious injury to his spinal cord in March, graduated with his classmates and received a moving, five-minute ovation from the crowd. He majored in both communication studies and economics and business and earned his degree with honors.
