Westmont Magazine Homecoming Highlights
The Warriors won, defeating Concordia University in an exciting basketball game. Lyle Hillegas began a new Homecoming tradition with a tour of Westmont’s history. Golfers played in the first ever Homecoming tournament at Sandpiper Golf Course. The classes returning for reunions set a new record for giving: $180,291. Alums certainly celebrated Homecoming with the proper Warrior spirit this year!
Three classes hosted especially large reunions: ’56, ’76, and ’95. Young alums turned out in impressive numbers, and the many Golden Warriors (’41–’48) who attended proved that Homecoming appeals to people from all eras.
The Three Tenors (Drs. Hillegas, Voskuyl, and Winter), who “serenaded” alums at the Saturday evening banquet, proved to be a crowd pleaser. With the gym transformed into an Italian trattoria complete with umbrellas, small tables, and a pasta bar, alums enjoyed an intimate dining atmosphere with their classmates. Westmont’s own vocalists (Mary Dombek, Professor Grey Brothers, and David Britton ’94) presented a delightful variety of Italian music. The student Chamber Singers also performed, carrying on the tradition of great Westmont music.
Chaplain Bart Tarman inspired those who attended the Sunday morning worship service with a moving story on the nature of true worship. Mike Willbanks ’92 shared his musical talents as he led singing during the service.
