Westmont Magazine Leaving a Living Legacy
With five children of their own to put through college, Carl ’72 and Deborah Van Buskirk ’73 Byers occasionally wonder why they created an endowed scholarship fund to benefit Westmont students. Each year, the “Carl Byers Family Scholarship” helps a student pay the cost of his or her education.
“Establishing this fund required a sacrifice on our part,” Carl notes. “But reaching beyond the needs of our own family allows us to invest in others’ lives. Because it’s an endowed fund, the scholarship will continue assisting students for many, many years.”
Carl, a real estate broker who lives in Fullerton, California, knows the high cost of tuition makes it difficult for many to attend Westmont. “We had a great experience in college and want to share it with others who might not be able to afford it. We believe strongly in the value of a Christian college education,” he adds.
