Westmont Magazine Making the Mericos Match
With months to spare, Westmont has exceeded its goal of raising $100,000 to secure a $40,000 grant from the Mericos Foundation to purchase new equipment for the biology department. The foundation required Westmont to make the match by December 31, 1995.
As of October 4, alumni/ae, parents, and friends had given and pledged $119,200 for the Mericos Campaign. The extra money will partially fund other biology projects, including the expansion of research and seminar space ($120,000) and the acquisition of additional equipment ($30,000).
The Mericos grant and the enthusiastic support of the Westmont community will help the biology department strengthen its exceptional program. Not only have the professors received prestigious research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, but students have achieved a remarkable 95 percent acceptance rate at medical schools. The number of students taking biology continues to grow each year, making the need for more space critical.
