Westmont Magazine Parents Host Send Off

Parents of new students in nine cities met with Jane Hideko Higa ’73, dean of students and vice president for student life, and Mary Hubbard Given ’76, executive director of alumni and parent relations, at special Send-Offs held in June and July. In most areas, current parents hosted the events.
Dean Higa discussed college policies and explained how she handles discipline. Her comments ranged from an explanation of chapel requirements to the process for resolving problems between roommates.

Mary Given, who oversees the parents program at Westmont, encouraged everyone to attend Parents Weekend, which takes place in March to coincide with Spring Sing. She also described the Parents Council, a group of people who meet twice a year with college administrators to represent the concerns of parents. They are willing to take phone calls from other parents to answer questions about Westmont. The names, addresses, and phone numbers of council members appear in the Parents Handbook, which parents will receive in September.

Send-offs took place in Orange County, Pasadena, Fresno, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Denver, Portland, Seattle, and Santa Barbara.
