What is it like to be an African-American member of Congress and an ordained minister? J.C. Watts, Jr., a Republican representative from Oklahoma, answered that question when he spoke to students on campus shortly before the November elections. In town to campaign for the GOP candidate for Congress, he took time to share his experiences as a college football star, a player in the Canadian Football League, and a youth pastor. He spoke of the need to address race-related issues and pointed out that Christians can play a significant role in this discussion. The November 11, 1996, issue of “Christianity Today” names him as one of 50 young evangelical leaders.
