Westmont Magazine A Red Feather in Our Cap

Westmont and President David Winter received the Santa Barbara United Way’s second annual Community Excellence Award at the Red Feather Ball, a special fund-raising event in October.

The ball honors an organization and an individual who have made significant community contributions. Robert Bryant of Bryant & Sons, the father of Westmont alums Michael Bryant ’82, Shannon Patrick Bryant ’85, and Kathleen Bryant Shields ’84, received the individual award.

Cox Communications developed a five-minute video about Westmont for the ball that focuses on the many contributions all members of the Westmont community make in the course of their daily lives, from volunteering at charitable organizations to interning at local businesses.

“We are delighted and grateful for this wonderful honor,” President Winter said. “The United Way does so much good in the community. It’s a privilege to be a part of the United Way family, and to help raise money for such a worthy cause.”

The Red Feather Ball raises funds for “Fun in the Sun,” which provides a recreational program for the very lowest income children from Santa Barbara. Last summer, more than 300 children participated, doubling the amount from the previous year.
