As you consider the many options to study off campus, we encourage you to think about what enhances your academic experience overall, and, when possible, your major area of study. Keep this in mind as you browse the programs and talk with your academic advisor(s). The Global Education staff can help you find a program that best fits your needs and interests.
Please note that students must first apply to the Office of Global Education for approval to participate in an affiliate program. Deadline to submit an affiliate program application for Fall 2024 is November 30, 2023. Priority will be given to upper-division students and students whose major or minor requires global study. Westmont's Global Health Uganda
Global Health Uganda provides students with the opportunity to complete an international internship/practicum while gathering insights into the growing field of global health. In cooperation with Uganda Studies Program during fall semesters, Westmont oversees a specialized track in Global Health at Uganda Christian University located just outside the capital city of Kampala. Required coursework includes Faith in Action in the Ugandan Context, Cross Cultural/Global Health Practicum, and a modular course taught in August prior to departure or on site during the semester. Students may also choose courses from the many disciplines offered at Uganda Christian University. (Selected fall semesters; open to all majors but geared for kinesiology and biology majors)
Organization for Tropical Studies, South Africa
OTS: African Ecology and Conservation gives students the opportunity to travel through the stunning landscapes of South Africa and gain exposure to its many habitats including incredibly diverse populations of birds, animals, and insects, making it an ecologist's paradise. Students will be housed at the Skukuza Camp and also spend time in a tented research village in Kruger National Park. Required classes: South African Ecosystems & Diversity, Field Research in Savanna Ecology, Conservation & Management of Protected Areas in South Africa, History Through Culture of South Africa. (Open to all majors)
Uganda Studies Program
The Uganda Studies Program (USP) at Uganda Christian University (UCU) provides students with immersion in a local community as well as broad exposure to a variety of people and places in Uganda and Rwanda. Applicants to USP may apply to live either on-campus at UCU or with a host family for the semester. USP offers a Social Work Emphasis (SWE), Global Health Emphasis (GHE), or Interdisciplinary Emphasis (IE). All options encourage students to participate in Ugandan life, serve local non-profits, and explore the intricacy of cross-cultural relationships which give students a firsthand perspective as they explore issues such as poverty, aid and missions. In addition to the required core course, Faith & Action in the Ugandan Context (4), students will choose from an approved selection of courses from the UCU curriculum for up to 16 credits. (Open to all majors). This program was formally part of the CCCU's BestSemester program.
