Westmont Magazine Twice as Much Opera in 2020

Building on the successful productions of “Die Fledermaus” in 2019 and “The Magic Flute” last spring, the Westmont music and theater departments will stage two operas in February and March 2020 at Santa Barbara’s New Vic Theatre.

The double bill of one-act operas features two of the most famous and popular composers. Set in London, Gioachino Rossini’s delightful comedy “The Marriage Contract” features a schem- ing father preparing to welcome a Canadian businessman who thinks he’s taking a mail-order bride back to the North American wilderness. As characters try to outwit each other, generosity and love prevail over an ill-conceived contract. “Gianni Schicchi” by Giacomo Puccini presents an even more complicated plot as a family tries to solve an inheritance gone wrong, young people fall in love, and a servant seeks to take control. Once again, John Blondell serves as stage director and Michael Shasberger as musical director.
