Jonathan Puckett ’13 has served in a variety of ministries at Westmont. For three years, he has worked with high school students at Community Covenant Church in Santa Barbara. “The joy of my life is seeing them mature in their faith,” he says. Last summer, he interned at a Free Methodist church in Garden Grove. “I learned more about ministry in those few months than in six years of being a Christian,” he says. He co-directed Emmaus Road last year, organizing, preparing and supporting students in summer outreach programs. He also spent a semester at Lithuania Christian College University in Klaipeda, studying and interacting with international students. These activities and his classes as a religious studies major have inspired his interest in earning a Master of Divinity degree and doing further graduate work in early church history. “I want to teach at a church or possibly a college,” he says. “I want to educate Christians about our rich past—the church has a beautiful history.” Jonathan came to Westmont after encountering the community of students on a visit. “The small campus and small classes create a good learning environment where we can share different ideas,” he says. “We get the intimacy of understanding where each idea comes from and the perspective of each person. We learn from professors who care about us. I’ve enjoyed going to Dr. Lee’s house for dinner and a time for faculty and students to talk and commune.” Significant scholarships, including one from the Stamps Foundation, have allowed him to attend Westmont. “I feel blessed,” he says.
